Meet the Staff - G. Joseph Peters

G. Joseph PetersG. Joseph (Joe) Peters has most recently served as Associate Executive Director for Catholic Education in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. In that capacity he served as chief operating officer for the Office of Catholic Education overseeing Catholic schools and faith formation programs in 39 counties of Central and Southern Indiana including 70 schools serving over 23,000 students. In addition to his administrative duties, which include operations, finances, legal affairs, communication, and school safety, Mr. Peters has served as staff to several parishes and deaneries considering new schools, expansions, and other structural changes, including three new Catholic schools in recent years. In 2000, the Archdiocese applied for and received a $10 million challenge grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. that was matched with over $8 million for instructional improvement. The success of this initiative has been publicized nationally and sustaining and replicating efforts are ongoing. Mr. Peters has been involved in many aspects of this successful grant process and its follow-up known as Project EXCEED.

Prior to 1996, Mr. Peters served as Associate Director of Schools for the Archdiocese. In this capacity, he served as a general educational consultant to schools as well as coordinator for marketing, development, and technology. Seven years of intensive marketing with corporate assistance resulted in enrollment growth of over 30 percent during the 1990's – an increase of over 6,000 students. Mr. Peters also headed a three-year project with Catholic School Management that resulted in the restructuring of the governance and administration of six interparochial high schools to support a new “culture for comprehensive development.” During the project, high school enrollment grew by 14 percent and with capital campaigns, the schools realized over $11.6 million in development revenue. From the base year of 1993 through 2001, the schools’ aggregate development income rose by 555 percent.

Mr. Peters has presented at several National Catholic Educational Association Conventions and regional conventions and has served as an NCEA “Shepherding the Shepherds” facilitator. He participated in the NCEA, Selected Programs Improving Catholic Education (SPICE) at Boston College. He is a certified Indiana School Safety Specialist and he has served as a site visitor with the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Today's Catholic Teacher magazine recognized him as a “Distinguished Diocesan Leader.”

Mr. Peters holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education in Administration from Ohio University and has done extensive post-graduate and certification work at several other universities. Before joining the Archdiocese of Indianapolis in 1985, he was principal of St. Peter's High School in Mansfield, Ohio (Toledo Diocese). From 1969 to 1980, Mr. Peters served in public education as a teacher, elementary principal, and assistant high school principal in Ohio.

Mr. Peters has served Catholic School Management and its clients since 1998 on a part-time basis, consulting, writing, and providing direct guidance in the areas of school administration, administrative structures, administrative span of control, team-building, ownership, governance, private school law, clinical supervision/performance appraisal, and school safety.
