Meet the Staff - Frederick Zilian, Ph.D.

Frederick Zilian, Jr. currently serves as International Student Liaison and History Teacher at Portsmouth Abbey School, Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Fred has taught at Portsmouth Abbey School since 1992 and has served as Dean of Faculty, Assistant Headmaster for Student Services, and Head of the History Department, teaching courses in: Advanced World History; Advanced European History; Advanced US History; Ancient/Medieval History; War, Morality and International Politics; and German I and II. Fred has also served as the Advisor to the Model United Nations Program, in addition to coaching baseball, basketball, softball, and intramural soccer. Fred is also a ballroom dance instructor.

Fred holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Military Academy (1970); a Master of Arts in International Affairs from Johns Hopkins University (1977); a Master of Arts (with highest distinction) in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College (1985); and a Ph.D. in International Relations – Strategic Studies from Johns Hopkins University (1996).

Fred has also taught at Salve Regina University and Rhode Island College, and from 1985-1989 was Associate Professor at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.

Fred is the author of one book, book chapters, and numerous essays and book reviews.

A native of New Jersey, Fred and his wife Geri, former Director of Admissions at Portsmouth Abbey School, and now a Senior Admissions Officer at Portsmouth Abbey, have three children and eight grandchildren.

Fred serves Catholic School Management and its clients on an adjunct basis, specializing in international student and boarding programs. In addition, Fred will work with secondary school administrators in establishing and overseeing Model United Nations programs.
